
Old Bellamy Road was designated as a Scenic Road in 1980. This designated scenic road is located in Northwest Alachua County ; west off of County Road 241, about four miles north of Alachua and continuing several miles to the northwest.
Scenic:
This is a virtually unspoiled dirt road leading to three miles of hiking trails in O'Leno State Park. Parts of the designated road are commonly known as Alligator Road .
Recreation:
Recreational opportunities abound along Old Bellamy Road . Visitors ride bicycles, horses and hike the length of the County Road into the O'Leno State Park. Bird and nature watching are also popular along this road.
Historical Significance:
The Old Bellamy Road was the first federal highway in Florida . The construction of Old Bellamy Road was commissioned by the Territorial Council in 1824. John Bellamy, a plantation owner at Monticello , received the commission, constructing the road for $20,000. The road was used as a major highway until the Civil War, when other roads emerged as preferred modes of travel.
This road passes the site that was once the town of Traxler and the Santa Fe Taloca Spanish Mission. It served as Main Street for Newnansville, a town one mile north of the city of Alachua .
